For years, businesses have been told they need to “create more content”, post consistently, create Reels, take more photos, stay visible and “feed” the algorithm.
And while there’s truth in all of that, I think we’ve created a bit of a problem. We’ve made content creation feel like a never-ending production line, and every Monday starts with:
- “What are we posting this week?”
- “We need another Reel.”
- “S**t, we need something for the weekend.”
Before you know it, a business has spent months creating content without ever really building an asset library. But there’s a better way.
Stop thinking about content as individual posts
Start thinking about it as an asset. If you’re investing in professional photography and video, the goal shouldn’t be to walk away with one polished video and a handful of photos.
A good content shoot should give you enough raw material to communicate your brand for months. One content session should produce:
- Brand videos
- Short-form videos
- Customer testimonials
- Behind-the-scenes content
- Product or service demonstrations
- Educational videos
- FAQs
- Founder and team content
- Professional photography
- Website imagery
- Advertising creative
- B-roll
- Social media content
And importantly, the original footage shouldn’t disappear into a hard drive after you’ve posted it once. It should keep working:
- A piece of footage that appears in a Reel this month could become part of an ad next month.
- A customer testimonial could be used on your website.
- A 60-second video could become three shorter pieces of content.
- A photoshoot could provide your social media imagery for months.
- A founder interview could become educational clips, quote graphics, website content and email content.
The value isn’t just in creating the content. It’s in how many times you can use it.
But great content isn’t the end of the marketing journey
This is where I think businesses sometimes get caught. They invest in great content, it looks amazing, people engage with it, the views start coming in, and then… nothing.
Because attention isn’t the same thing as a lead, and a lead isn’t the same thing as a customer. There’s a journey between those things:
Content, attention, enquiry, follow-up, nurture, conversation, sale.
Every step matters. You can have the best content in your industry, but if someone enquires and nobody responds until the next day, you’ve got a problem. You can generate plenty of enquiries, but if there’s no follow-up process, you’re going to lose opportunities.
You can have a great sales team, but if the leads coming through aren’t qualified or nurtured properly, they’re spending their time chasing people who aren’t ready to buy.
Marketing doesn’t stop when someone fills out a form. In many cases, that’s where the important part begins.
The best content has a job to do
Not every piece of content needs to generate a sale. Some content builds awareness. Some establishes authority. Some answers questions and creates trust. Some introduces the people behind the business, some gets someone to stop scrolling, and some is designed specifically to generate an enquiry.
The mistake is expecting every post to do everything. Instead, build a library of content with different purposes, then distribute it according to where someone is in their journey.
Someone who has never heard of your business might need a completely different message from someone who visited your website yesterday. And someone who watched 80% of your video might be ready for a completely different message from someone seeing your brand for the first time.
That’s where content starts becoming much more powerful.
Create once. Repurpose relentlessly.
I don’t think businesses necessarily need to create more content. They need to get more value from the content they’re already creating. Imagine investing in one professional content day. Instead of thinking “We need enough content for this month,” think:
“What can we capture today that we can still use six months from now?”
That shift changes everything. You’re no longer creating content because Tuesday has arrived. You’re building a bank of assets that can be used across your website, social channels, email, advertising and sales process.
And when that content is connected to the rest of your marketing, it becomes even more valuable, because the goal isn’t to collect views. The goal is to move the right people closer to doing business with you.
Content shouldn’t be a treadmill
The businesses that win won’t necessarily be the ones producing the most content. They’ll be the ones getting the most value from every piece of content they create: creating better, repurposing smarter, distributing intentionally, nurturing consistently, and making it easy for the right people to take the next step.
Because ultimately, content isn’t the destination. It’s one part of the journey between someone discovering your business and becoming your customer. And when those pieces are connected properly, your marketing starts working a lot harder than the number of posts you’ve published each week would suggest.
Create once. Make it work for you for months.
